The definition of reducing is to lessen, and by starting some new, simple habits, you can do just that! Although these actions may seem small, they can make a world of difference.
How can we reduce our consumption?
We can reduce our trash output by making sure we are
recycling everything we can, reusing materials when we can, avoiding
over-packaging things, keeping track of what we need/don’t need/don’t use, and
trying to conserve what we have. Everyone can make a difference!
Pay Attention to
Packaging!
These
days, lots of products come with too much packaging. Layer after layer of
plastic comes off before you can enjoy that tasty treat or before you can bust
open your new toy. Try to avoid these products by buying things like loose
tomatoes instead of prepackaged ones.
Another
big packaging choice comes at the cash register. Although plastic is better
than paper, a reusable cloth tote is even better! Skip bags altogether when
only buying a few small items. This will help keep bags in the stores, off the
streets, and out of landfills.
Unplug it!
Did
you know that even when an item isn’t on, it’s still using energy if it’s
plugged into the wall! For example, the microwave that you only use for
15seconds a day is stealing energy for the entire 24hours that it’s on! A
simple way to avoid this energy waste is to unplug things when you’re not using
them.
If
you think that this might be a hassle, then buy a power strip; With one flick
of a switch it’s either on or off!
Buy a Reusable
Water Bottle!
Not only are there a number of water
bottles with awesome designs, but plastic water bottles leave a huge footprint
behind! Not just because many people don’t recycle them, but they’re shipped
from all over. Also, there are many water filtration systems that make your tap
water taste spring fresh!

Activity:
Reduce your carbon
footprint by going (by yourself or with friends!) on a bike ride this month.
Bicycles leave none of the air pollution caused by cars, don’t use gasoline
resources, and are much cheaper than a car! If you really want to make a
difference, try using your bike for any adventures that are close enough to
ride to.
